SARAH JACOBSON ‘08

I am from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to which most people at Tufts respond, "Is that in … uh… Minneapolis?" Though completely overextended my sophomore year, I got involved with the Public Journal when my friend Ben was taking over for the semester while Daniela and Jordan were studying abroad. I helped him out with the layout, a godforsaken tedious job for which I found an odd predilection. We chose the cover after I had been drawing sketches of the public toilets in the dorms for three days (I have no idea what I was thinking) by scanning in a page of my paint-filled sketchbook. And so I was hooked, especially to reading the pieces before anyone else and making the final (shh) edits of what goes in. A new extension of the Public Journal at Tufts this semester has been an actual, physical, tangible empty journal sitting in "The Tower," the high-traffic café in our library.  It was an experiment of sorts, but juicy stuff has shown up on its pages. Who knows how much of it is true, but it's great guilty reading material nonetheless. Long live the freedom of expression!
