I grew up in Lake Orion, a little town in Michigan, and came to the University of Michigan in the fall of 2005. I made a lot of mistakes freshman year, like taking French at 8am, and going to fraternity parties where I drank warm beer. I thought that being an English major was a mistake too when I took my freshman English requirement, but that's where I met Jason. I don't think he actually wanted to talk to me because he was usually trying to read something before class, but I kept bugging him anyway, especially once I found out he was from Manhattan and liked Phantom of the Opera. We took another English class together second semester, and started eating crappy dorm food together after. He made fun of me for liking Garden State, and I made fun of him for liking baseball. We've been giving each other a hard time ever since. It was the summer after our freshman year when Jason told me about Cornell's Public Journal. I was intrigued and we decided to try to start a UM chapter. I made a Facebook group and annoyed a lot of people by continually inviting them to join. He figured out how to do the paperwork and apply for funding. It took the rest of the summer, and most of sophomore year, but we created Issue One of the UMPJ. Jason and I lovingly refer to the books as our children; he is the mother and I am the father. We're hoping to get the little PJs some siblings soon!
